The Art Deco Spire of the Empire State Building

vintage postcards

The Empre State building's distinctive Art Deco Spire was originally designed to be a mooring mast and depot for zeppelins! The 102nd floor was originally a landing platform with a dirigible gangplank.

A particular elevator, traveling between the 86th and 102nd floors, was supposed to transport passengers after they checked in at the observation deck on the 86th floor.

The movie "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" (which is pretty good, if you have not seen it) has a scene of a zeppelin docking on top of the Empire State Building.

The problem with the idea, as romantic a notion as it is, is that there are high winds up there, and high winds like that are death for airships.

The Chrysler Building has an even fancier art deco spire. For some reason, people making movies in which New York City is destroyed like to show the spire crashing to the street below point-down. I've seen this in at least two movies.

I finally got my latest Friday Fish Postcard Fry entry up on my blog.

Oh the Empire State building, makes me think of "An Affair to Remember" every time. {sigh} I love that movie. I'm such a romantic when it comes to movies. ha ha Hope your feeling better my sweet friend! Today I'm going to try to learn how to get my hair up in a french twist, like Audrey Hepburn did in preparation for the Breakfast at Tiffany's tea party tomorrow. I'll need about a 100 hairpins. ha ha

A ltttle bit risky, no ?
Do you remember these images of the Zeppelin in fire ?
What would have occured if it had happened in the streets of NY ?

Marie thanks for posting one of my favorite buildings! I live close to New York City and when I was a girl lived even closer to the Empire State Building. I've been on that observation tower and it gets very, very windy up there.:)

Don't even mention "An Affair to Remember" or "Sleepless in Seattle" around me and my daughter. Just thinking about the last scene there in S in S I have tears and when Deborah Kerr tells Cary Grant that she "was looking up" and says"You were there. It was the nearest thing to heaven," who doesn't have tears?

Thanks for bringing back great memories from past days for me. I've been there with school trips and family and with exchange students. Lots of fun! Might even have a postcard somewhere to share.:)

Happy PFF Marie,
I didn't know there was an airport at the top of the building, it's funny or dangerous ?

Another piece of fascinating trivia o dazzle them with down the pub.I think I need to switch to the postcard trade from photography. It's a far quirkier world.

That reminds me of those old dress forms.

Hey, do you have a new background or am I losing my mind? In any case, I like it!
