Eiffel Tower Free Fall

Franz Reichelt vintage postcard

Franz 'the flying tailor' Reichelt invented this flashy parachute coat in 1912. The fearless and foolhardy Austrian couturier decided to flaunt his invention by jumping off the first deck of the Eiffel Tower. The fatal 60 meter fall lasted 5 seconds and made quite a crater at the bottom of the tower.... There's even a video .
Warning: Eeeeeeeeeeeek!

You Sunk My Battleship!

battleship vintage postcard

My 9 year old son always beats me at the game Battleship. ALWAYS. He's quite smug and cheeky about it too. Can you ground a kid for not letting you ever win? I've pulled out the big guns and found a strategy site for the game (pathetic, eh?) My kid's going down:) Arrrg!
French Lesson: The game Battleship is called Touché- Coulé which literally means Hit - Sink!

Not a Boaring Day!

wild boar vintage postcard

Francois and I saw a sanglier (wild boar) while hiking yesterday! We backed away as silently as possible with dropped jaws and pounding hearts. The tuskless females are just as dangerous as males. The bristle haired sows will charge with their mouths open and actually bite you! Danger danger Will Robinson!

Paris is Hopping! - Camera Critters

rabbit vintage postcards
Paris is truly hopping! I found this ginormous cotton candy pink rabbit statue in front of the famous department store Printemps. The display windows are also gussied up with a smaller version of these cotton tailed cuties. I almost expected to find a few Easter eggs:)

Les Parapluies de Cherbourg

vintage postcards

I'm in Cherbourg until Thursday and will be back in the blogging saddle then:) This gorgeous coastal town in Normandy is where one of my favorite films takes place. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a sad yet bewitching musical. This Netflix must is both visually and aurally delightful! Be sure to put it on your list:)

Pansy O'Hara

Margret Mitchell had originally named Gone With the Wind's heroine Pansy! Her editor pleaded with her to change the name to Scarlett. The Southern belle spitfire certainly was no Pansy! Ms. O'Hara was a survivor through and through:)

Hamburger Heaven

hamburger vintage postcard

I found a hamburger phone in our local junk/antique shop! This sesame seeded cuteness now adorns a plate resting on the kitchen counter. My boys rushed to find plastic french fries from their toy box and added to the kitschy fat-free decor! This was the most fun $5 dollars I've spent in ages:)

Babylonian Envelopes

vintage postcard
If you were living in Ancient Babylon (six thousand years ago) you might bake a letter along with your daily bread.

Messages were written on clay tablets, which were then baked to harden them. The tablets were then covered with more clay and popped in the oven a second time.

The inner tablet could only be read by breaking open the outer layer of clay. The 'secret' message was thus secure. A hammer is my kind of letter opener!

Swearing Like a Chinese Sailor

outhouse vintage postcard

The boys have had the worst POTTY mouths lately! Where did my angel sons go? The more I reprimanded the worse it got...until.... I ran across a 'Learn to Swear in Chinese' CD! I sat the little sailors down and brainwashed them with Chinese expletives. It worked! The house rule is that they are only allowed to no-no in Chinese. (I probably should have picked a more obscure language) Da-shiong bao-jah-shr duh la-doo-tze!

Dubble Bubble Trubble !

vintage postcard
Johnny came home out of sorts yesterday! He was jabbed and teased after school about his bubble gum blowing skills!?! This called for isoprene-isobutylene action (that's the main rubber ingredient in most gums:) We bought 5 packs and started the chewing fest! We smacked, laughed, and bubbled for hours until he got it down pact:) These are serious 6 year old skills people!

Postcard Friendship Friday #19 - Olé!

vintage postcards

Look at the Spanish post box Con sent me! He snapped it while on vacation. He blogs over at Suil Eile (that's Gaelic for another eye or view) and lives in Dublin! Don't you think that this letter box has old world charm with a generous dash of razzatazz? Be sure to visit him too:) Happy PFF!

Y'a Bon Banania!

banana vintage postcards

Banania is an iconic powdered chocolate drink that helped sustain the French troops during World War I. Soldiers happily sported chocolate milk mustaches;) This jolly Senegalese soldier makes me want to drink a glass lickey split!

Are you hungry for more history? Yes! I made a Banania video last night that will hit the spot then:)

ABC Wednesday - 'U' for Umbrella

umbrella vintage postcard

I've always liked the French expression: Il pleut des cordes (It's raining rope). When it is really pouring, it does almost seem like the raindrops are joined together into long, twisty ropes stretching from sky to ground!

hehehe....... I like it when it rains men too! Hallelujah!

Gargling Gargoyles of Notre Dame de Paris

notre dame vintage postcard

My legs are still sore from scaling the 387 steep stone spiral steps (love those s words) that lead up to Notre Dame de Paris' bell tower! I got to stick my tongue out at the city below along with the gargoyles and chimeras:) My jaw dropped when Francois (who was born and raised in the city of lights) told me that he had never been to the top! I dragged his French derrière to this 'touristy' spot and he ended up LOVING it! Duhhhh.... Parisians are officialy bonkers!

Here is a Notre Dame coloring page for your kids or grandkids:) Johnny loved it and I've printed it out 6 times already!
