Postcard Friendship Friday #27 - Shakespeare and Pancakes

vintage postcards

Pancakes! Delish! Shakespeare mentioned this flat treat in the play Pericles, Prince of Tyre.

"Come, thou shant go home, and we'll have flesh for holidays, fish for fasting-days, and moreo'er puddings and flap-jacks, and thou shalt be welcome."

Poor William didn't have an artificial super saturated sugar solution to douse on his cakey indulgance though! Happy PFF:)

Vintage Palmolive Soap

vintage palmolive

My parents don't have a dishwasher here (oy!) That means that I've been scrubbing mountains of dasterdly dishes with emerald green Palmolive soap. The original sudsy stuff was made with both palm and olive oil......hence the name! In 1927 the company sponsored a critically acclaimed radio concert show called 'The Palmolive Hour.' It's on youtube! I'm going to listen to it while I do the dinner dishes:)

Postcard Frienship Friday #27 - Let's go Bowling!

bowling vimtage postcard
This bowling alley is a hop, skip, and a jump away from my house! Isn't it a beaut of a vintage postcard? Here's Johnny boy and his winning ball. He blew the family off of the cheesy cakes (slang term for lanes that I just learned:)

I just read about cosmic bowling! You use a glow in the dark ball and roll your apple down lighted lanes. I just HAVE to try that too:) Happy PFF everybody!

Pet Airways!

I was barking happy to read about the new pet only airline. Owners aren't even allowed to fly in cargo:) Pet Airways promises to transport your pet with lots of love, safety, and comfort in the main cabin. Tickets are surprisingly inexpensive too. Bone voyage Fido!

Hula Hoop Vintage Postcard

hula hoop vintage postcard

In Ancient Greece Hula Hoops were made out of dried stiff grapevines! A droopy Tarzan vine just wouldn't do the trick:) Citizens hooped as a serious form of exercise. Watch out Socrates .. Roxanne Rose has the current hooping record. The American went 90 whole hours in 1987!

Vintage Waterskiing at Cypress Gardens

I'm squeezing in another water skiing doozy! I think it's amazing when you can match a card to actual vintage youtube footage. Mike Osbourne is a hunky dreamboat in this clip! On the postcard he looks like a lipstick wearing Sheldon with scary sasquatchy long feet though:)

Beautiful Beef-a-roni

vintage postcard

My Mother is a Saint! She let me know that her larder is now stocked with Beef-a-roni! I'm sure she did quite bit of eye-rolling while buying it:) She informed me that I am officially a big WIERDO daughter. I do live in France and I do adore French food buttttt... pass me a bowl of that tin and tomato flavored nostalgia please! I'll be flying to the States in 2 days! That won't keep me from my blogging addiction though:)

The Mail Cats of Belgium - 1879

cat vintage postcard

Liège, Belgium 1879 - Thirty-seven plucky mail cats were trained and employed to carry bundles of letters (and postcards) to nearby villages.

Editor : Cats delivering mail? You've finally lost it!
Marie . This is history! Read this!.

They were 'trained' to complete this harrowing task for saucers of milk. The experiment was short - lived.....

The finicky felines proved to be undisciplined. (imagine that!) I've been attempting to teach my cat not to wake me up at 5 in the morning. I've changed her name to rooster. Francois has changed her name to *?!éx§£!

Marianne and the Phrygian Cap

French Vintage Postcard

Meet Marianne! She is one of the national symbols of the French Republic. She can be found on the former franc currency, stamps, sculptures, postcards, France's government logo, ads, etc!

But what is that funny thing on her head? Watch my video vlog to find out:)

Waterskiing in a Tutu

waterskiing vintage postcard
Isn't this an absolutely peachy chorus line of waterskiing beauties? These prima ballerinas of Cypress Gardens (located in Winter Haven, Florida) waterskiied into the hearts of spectators in the 1950's. I was a barefooting champ as a teen:) It's one of the most thrilling sports out there! I HAVE to try it wearing a cotton candy pink tutu now:)

I have a serious youtube addiction. But.... I found an actual vintage waterskiing clip from the Gardens!

My son John has gone wacky for yams! He lives and breathes the sweet orange fleshed tuber. He even wanted leftover yam casserole for breakfast! It's all thanks to this blessed vintage Honest John crate label. Soooooo.... I'm in the process of photoshopping other veggie labels to include his name! How does Big John's Broccoli sound?

Evian bottled water is quashing my baby making mojo! I've had bambinos on the brain lately and would really like to have another one! But....... these break - dancing, b - boying, rollerskating baby commercials are giving me the heebie jeebies! I promise to drink your dumb overpriced water if you pull these ads. Please? I'm trying to be fruitful and multiply here and you're freaking me out Evian!

French Giraffe Mania in 1827

Parisians started seeing spots in 1827! Giraffe mania spread after the Pasha of Egypt offered this extraordinary long necked gift to King Charles X of France. Fabrics, furniture, wallpaper, porcelain, and even soap were decorated with a giraffe pattern. Women piled their hair up fashionably à la giraffe. This high in the sky chignon was supported by wire frames and often decorated with giraffe inspired ribbons . Oh la la!

My town is geared up and ready for the Tour de France to whiz through it! Shops are decorating their windows with these bulging google eyed guys and I seem to find bicycle themed surprises wherever I look! There were even little 'velo' cakes at the bakery this morning:) I did NOT eat 4 of them for breakfast. Nope. I'm a dieting Saint....ugh.. I feel sick...

In 1748 the French Parliment had actually forbidden the cultivation of potatoes. They were feared to cause leprosy! Sit back and enjoy listening to how Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, Benjamin Franklin, and Antoine Parmentier changed the tasty tuber's bad rap! Happy Postcard Friendship Friday:)

PS. Is my voice loud enough in these videos? I was thinking about getting a microphone. What do you think? I definatly need to work on my editing skills too!
