My legs are still sore from scaling the 387 steep stone spiral steps (love those s words) that lead up to Notre Dame de Paris' bell tower! I got to stick my tongue out at the city below along with the gargoyles and chimeras:) My jaw dropped when Francois (who was born and raised in the city of lights) told me that he had never been to the top! I dragged his French derrière to this 'touristy' spot and he ended up LOVING it! Duhhhh.... Parisians are officialy bonkers!
Here is a Notre Dame coloring page for your kids or grandkids:) Johnny loved it and I've printed it out 6 times already!

The French word pique -nique first appeared in print in 1692:) The verh 'piquer' means to pick or peck. 'Nique' was just a fun little rhyming duplication of the word. I actually like the idea of steaming Dr Pepper with a bit of lemony razzmatazz! You can only buy Dr. P in a few specialty shops here in Paris. I'm going to pop out and buy some today. It's probably quite blurky but I'm curious! Meow:)

Hooray for funky converse sneakers! I've been walking in these rainbowy chucks of late. I had a bit of writer's block until I looked down at my feet:) I looked through my collection and found this l'arc - en - ciel (rainbow in French) gem. Voilà! Long live sratch n' sniff stamps! To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of cacao beans at the port city of Bayonne, the French postal service just issued these chocolate scented beauts which depict scenes from the history and manufacture of chocolate. The micro capsules in the ink will reportadly last up to two years!

'S' - Seventies Snail Souvenir - ABC Wednesday

Groovy! This slimy seventies snail souvenir is from the region of France that I live in. Bourgogne (Burgundy in English) is known for its fine wine and of course escargot! They are really quite divine with a garlic, parsley, and butter sauce! The greedy gastropods munched on vineyard's carefully tended grape leaves. The Burgundians in turn munched on them. That's revenge for you!

Spam was a life saving tinned meat staple during World War II. 
It was the ideal combat ration because it could be shipped easily and didn't have an expiration date! Fresh meat was just difficult to get to soldiers at the front. By mid-war, Hormel was producing 15 million cans of Spam for the troops each week. The soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy, raised the flag, and then ate Spam!
In the United States beef was rationed and expensive. You had to present you war time coupon book in order to get a slab. Spam didn't fall under the same restrictions. It was tooted as a miracle meat. 'Eaten cold or hot, Spam hits the spot!'

I just read that the first 'sunglasses' were worn by Chinese judges in the 12th century. These flat panes of polished smoky quartz were used to hide facial expression while questioning witnesses! Joséphine de Beauharnais had stubby black teeth due to her childhood habit of chewing on sugar cane! She was born in Martinique to a creole sugar plantation owning family.
Napoleon Bonaparte certainly didn't seem to mind:) He once wrote,"You to whom nature has given spirit, sweetness, and beauty, you who alone can move and rule my heart, you who knows all too well the absolute empire you exercise over it!"

'R' is for Raggedy Ann

Here I am clutching my Raggedy Ann doll! Awwwwwww! The first gladdening Raggedy Ann stories (written in 1915 by Johnny Gruelle) were based on a real rag doll found by the author's daughter in an attic trunk.
He drew the famous black eyes and red triangular nose onto the faceless rag doll. From his bookshelf, he pulled a book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley, and combined the names of two poems, "The Raggedy Man" and " Little Orphan Annie." He said, "Why don’t we call her Raggedy Ann?
