Traditional Costumes of Brittany - Bragou Bras

breton vintage postcard

This charming little Breton is wearing the 'bragou bras'. These linen puffy trousers end just above the knee and were the everyday work breeches of men and boys in the early 1900's of Brittany. This bonny boy is about to smoke his first pipe too! bretton francais

Seems an odd thing for this child to be holding during the portrait session. Do you really think pipe smoking was condoned at such a young age? Love the image!

Cute on one level, disturbing on another. Can you imagine the uproar if this was an image created today. You do find some corkers

What a kool post.I love the little boys clothes and I like that he is going to smoke that pipe.I'm sure its just a tradition and not a common place thing to do everyday.I love your blog. I never tire of looking at old post cards.

I'm very interested in traditional costumes at the moments, having just tried my hand at making two costumes for Midsommar Festival. Would love to see more like this!

Holy moly that hardly seems real! The pants, the pipe, the shoes, the hair. My, how the world changes.

I agree with Chuck Pefley...how odd... however, it does go with the MC Hammer dancing pants though!

Lovely image, Marie.
In fact I read: La première pipée - Jeune Breton bourrant sa pipe. I think a pipe is a bit out of place with a child: not because it's a bad thing but just because it's an eyesore (for me)! :-)

OK, they may have been longer, but now I know where MC Hammer got the idea for his pants!!! ~Lori

I never would have guessed that was a boy.

Interesting i just read a book about the rural community change during the 17 to 19 century of France. Very likely we would only see boys in this costume only for tourist even in 1900 already, just like if we visit any exotic places now.

Aha! See, I knew smoking was cool! :P

Those shoes look a tad bit uncomfortable. I wonder if he will light up and smoke it or if it's just a prop?

Rune Eide said...

Fascinating clothes! I'm glad you told me it was a boy - I thought it was a girl...

Silly me.

JamaGenie said...

I'm guessing the pipe was only a prop, like some parents think it's "funny" to take pics of a kid holding a beer. But those pants... Oh my.

Talk about gender confusion - I'd a sworn this young lad was a girl. It's a great card! I have seen photos of young kids in New York around the first of the 20th century all very seriously smoking pipes!
