Bobbing for Halloween Vintage Postcards

The jolly game ducking or bobbing for apples originated in England during the reign of King Henry VII. Apples were symbols of love and fertility. The first one to catch an apple would be the next to get hitched! Who knew that a crunchy red delicious could foretell a romantic match? Halloween vintage postcards

Adam & Eve - the first couple hitched, and they owe it all to an apple.

I really didn't know that about bobbing for apples. That chick with the apple looks like her mouth is exploding or something.

I used to love to bob for apples. Is it still done at parties? I remember when we lived in the US that my kids went to a Halloween party all ready to bob for apples 'like mama did when she was little,' only to be told by the child's mother that bobbing was now considered unsanitary! Guess you drool in the water. Sheesh.

I've only done that once or twice. It wasn't that much fun.

A day for a wedding I must dance with a man with an apple between our chin. Not easy but very funny.
My mother gave some old postcards about Paris.

I was never very good at apple bobbing, either. Guess successful "bobbing" isn't a pre-requisite to marriage, though, as we will celebrate our 41st anniversary next week.

Fun postcard and history -:)

Oh, my goodness! We played that game as kids, and then my kids played it as a party game! How funny--I had NO idea about the real meanings behind ducking for apples!

Gorgeous postcard by the way. I am feeling nostolgic. (Grin)

we 'ducked' for apples this weekend, but sorry to say, we weren't that civilized looking with our wet faces and bedraggled hair (no bow ties here) lol
