Marianne and the Phrygian Cap

French Vintage Postcard

Meet Marianne! She is one of the national symbols of the French Republic. She can be found on the former franc currency, stamps, sculptures, postcards, France's government logo, ads, etc!

But what is that funny thing on her head? Watch my video vlog to find out:)

Wow! I never paid much attention to the famous French coin-lady's hat before! It makes sense, once I watched your wonderful video. You made a history lesson quite fun! Especially with Papa Smurf thrown in!

I had no idea about the story behind Marianne's hat. So interesting!

I'm a bit later than usual with my entry today, a mixture of struggling with Blogger post scheduling and having lost track of the days of the week!

Chuck Pefley sent me here, and he also linked to my Marianne, although mine had her name in the title for a very different reason. Your Postal Service just issued a new version of the Marianne stamp as I recall, although I don't remember at the moment whether it was well-received or not. GREAT post, and Blog!

I think only you would see the connection between the Smurfs and Marianne ;-) Have a great weekend.

Papa Smurf was french? I didn't know that! You always do such a nice job on your vlogging. I hadn't noticed the hat - honestly, I thought it was a hairstyle lol

Thanks for stopping by my place this week and watching my vlog (on Wreck This Journal.) I was not terribly comfortable doing it, but was SO happy to have done it. I'm sure more vlogging will be in the works.

I can't join you all this week, but I hope to visit everyone as usual!

Have a fabulous day!

Thanks for the history lesson and thanks for visiting my blog. I had an opportunity to visit France in March and was captivated by the country and the people. We were in Paris and then on the French Riviera. Would love to come back and see more. I want to see more of Paris and also visit Normandy.

Marie -- while I don't have any French ancestry, I have always loved that my parents named me Marianne, with the French spelling.

I am sure there is much mispronouncing of the "frig-ian" cap, if you know what I mean!

Loved your video blog explanation -- but hearing your voice freaked out my little kitten who was sleeping on my lap - tres amusant!
