In 1878 Orville and Wilbur Wright's father, who traveled often as a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, brought home a toy "helicopter" for his two younger sons. The device was based on an invention of French aeronautical pioneer Alphonse Penaud. Made of paper, bamboo and cork with a rubber band to twirl its rotor, it was about a foot long. The brothers played with it until it broke, then built their own. In later years, they pointed to their experience that toy as the initial spark of their interest in flying

Every French child sings the beloved song 'Sur le Pont d'Avignon - On the Avignon Bridge' in nursery school and wants to dance on it!
The bridge's construction (1171 - 1185) was inspired by a local shepherd boy who was commanded by angels to build a bridge across the Rhone river. He was ridiculed until he dramaticaly 'proved' his divine inspiration by miraculously lifting a huge block of stone!

Jeanne Dupont loved fish and her son so much that she knit him this sweater. He subsequently changed his name, disowned Maman, and moved to Tahiti. The sweater was burned.

This is the bell from Basilique du Sacré - Coeur de Montmatre in Paris. It is the largest bell in France. It weighs in at 19 tons and has a diameter of 3 meters! This is one of my favorite cards. I feel like I live and breathe history through it:)

During the Great Paris Flood of 1910 wooden walkways (you might want to enlarge this vintage postcard image for an even closer look) were set up by the government. The water flooded the basements of the Louvre. The water rushed through the newly built métro (subway) system. About 1 million people were displaced from their homes!
The Latin motto of Paris is, 'Fluctuat nec Megitur - She is tossed by the waves, but is not sunk' The city of lights certainly proved it in 1910!

During World War II, most fruits rich in vitamin C became almost impossible to obtain in the United Kingdom. Blackcurrants grow like weeds in the UK climate so the government decided to encourage the planting of the crop.
During wartime blackcurrant cordial (what a vitamin packed cocktail) was distubuted to the nation's children for free. Blackcurrant flavourings have been popular in the UK ever since! Enjoy the Big Ben vintage postcard:)
