vintage postcards
Tomorrow is May Day! Here in France, we celebrate by exchanging sprigs of muguet (lily-of- the-valley) Charles IX started the tradition in 1561. He received a bonny little bouquet himself as a symbol of luck and Springtime. He liked it so much that he gave every lady in court this lovely bell shaped blossom!

Bearded Lady Vintage Postcard - Clémentine Delait
vintage postcards
Clémentine Delait was a French bearded lady from Thaon-les-Vosges. This spunky woman always boasted that she could grow a thicker beard than her dear husband! She wasn't a bit embarrassed by her facial hair. She owned a café which was always hopping with gawking tourists and amassed quite a bit of moolah by selling postcards of her famous hairy chin!

Spaghetti Vintage Postcard
vintage postcards
This little cutie patootie is clutching a box of spaghetti! I have a huge pot of zippy sauce simmering on the stove right now! How do you cook you spaghetti?
I like to karate chop the pasta in half before putting it in the pot. I've been banned from that job in the kitchen. Francois the spaghetti snob likes to be able to twirl the whole noodle onto his fork. Ha!

DId you know that alligators were unusually good reptilian Mums? They will often carry the hatchlings (called pods) to the water in their jaws. These slash jawed females stay with their babies for up to two years!
This zookeeper bears a striking resemblance to Captain Kangeroo! I hope that he's not on the menu along with the flapping chicken. Eeeek!

Retro Play Doh
vintage postcards
Isn't this retro Play Doh canister divine! Play-Doh was originally concocted by a Mr. Noah McVicker as a pliable putty - like wallpaper cleaner! When the company heard that nursery schools were using it as a modeling compound the product was reworked and of course became a huge hit!
The boys and I played with it all afternoon!:) Johnny made about 50 mini pizzas and Noah made a bust of Napoleon and then tried to sell it to me for 20 dollars! Jeez!

The Super Lamb Banana Vintage Postcard
vintage postcards
The 17 foot Super Lamb Banana of Liverpool, England needs a cape and it's own comic book.
It's superpowers include wowing tourists right and left! It represents the port's rich history in the trade of lambs and import of the tasty torpedo shaped fruit. The funky statue also has punchy political power. Super Lamb Banana is meant to suggest to the public the dangers of genetically modified food.
This vintage postcard gal gives the big hunk of steel two bananas up!

Postcard Friendship Friday - Violet Lifesavers
vintage postcards
New to Postcard Friendship Friday? Welcome!! Go read this to get started:)
vintage postcard
Lifesavers with a smack of violet existed in 1919! Unusual flavors of this time included clove, malt o milk, and licorice. This iconic American hard candy is now beloved for their mint and fruit drops!
The shape of this little bonbon was due to the malfunctioning pill press that made them. The inventor didn't originally want holy sweets! He stuck with the design because of the Titanic disaster. People began associating the candy with the life preservers that were just coming into use!

This example of a rather short lace bigouden head-dress is the symbol of the tradition and identity of the Bigouden region of France. About 20 years ago, more than 3,000 women still wore this tall sugar loaf shaped bonnet. I want one!

Potato Aphrodisiac
vintage postcards
Queen Elizabeth I adored a candy made from potatoes, anise, caraway seeds, and sea holly. They sweetened the breath and were known to arouse sexual desire. Aphrodisiac qualities were ascribed to the tuber during the 16th and 17th century. Potatoes were called love apples then. I do seemingly lust after potato chips. Maybe there is a connection!

Noah: Why are they always talking about trees in Star Wars?

You get a forest instead of a vintage Easter postcard today!. I'm sure that there are a few colored eggs hidden in it:)

Henri Matisse pawned his wife's sapphire engagement ring to buy this painting by Paul Cézanne. Matisse was intrigued by the way Cézanne applied unrealistic techniques to human figures. He studied this painting with pure fascination. It become his muse!
I would sell my rock lickety split for 'Les Trois Baigneuses' too! Wouldn't you? A girl can dream!
