hippo vintage postcards
Hippo sweat is pink. I'm not kidding! The rosy liquid helps the hairless hippo avoid a sunburn. The pigment of the secretion absorbs the sun's blistering UV rays. It's sunscreen au naturel.
The 'sweat' also acts as an antibiotic ointment. (watch out Neosporin) It's a lifesaving feature for male hippos, which often get injured when sparring with their sharp teeth over territory.
'This explains why hippo gashes and wounds rarely seem to get infected, even though male hippos have frequent, fierce fights.'
This vintage postcard friend from Jardin des Plantes in Paris could be the new spokeshippo for Coppertone!

Now I never knew that! I want pink sweat too. Pink is one of my favorite colors. :o)
Ha, that's good. I think I'd heard that before. Here there's a Hypo Bank, which is advertised by a hippo, since the 'y' sound is a long 'i'...and I guess they thought that sounded like hippo. Who wants to invest in a hippo bank? But then, there are piggy banks...
Happy PS! Interesting. :-)
I did NOT know this about hippos...how very interesting and I can't wait to dazzle someone with my new-found knowledge!! Isn't Mother Nature amazing??!?!

Is this why they have a pinkish hue when they are out of the water? Fascinating!

I love the hippo's little legs! I'm sure they are fierce and horrible, but their short legs and low-slung bellies are just comical.
Like the postcard. I really like elephants too. Good CC pick.
I had no idea! Pink sweat - wouldn't that be neat!
With their short legs, round plumpness and odd-ball faces, hippos are so cute! It's a shame they are vicious creatures though ;)
Thank you very much for leaving a comment on my blog, it brought me to your own splendid site which I'll now be following joyfully :)
Wishing you a cheery and beautiful day,
♥ Jessica
