Vinolia Otto was the ambassador soap of the White Star line.
Every first class passenger of the Titanic was issued a cake of this lemon scented luxury. Bathtubs on steamers of this era were armed with fresh and saltwater spigots. It was very in vogue to bathe in invigorating salty waters.
You can actually still buy this nostalgic soap here! You might want to wear your life preserver in the tub though;)

Sneeeeeze! Thanks you guys for all of the 'get well soon' comments! You are all so peachy keen:)
I am going to order this soap today. I am really really really curious!
I don't guess any of that original soap survived the "plunge"??
Glad you're on the mend!
Wow, the postcards of the Titanic look great! And funny to know that one can still buy the nostalgic soap...
Fine that you feel better now. The whiskey works wonders ;)
This is a great site for finding unusual products - such as "Mitchell's Wool Fat" for irritated skin. Ummm...we may want to stick with the lemon scented soap.
Marie, hope your feeling better today. Very interesting history lesson. The saga of the Titanic never fails to provide more and more small bits of knowledge. I wonder what the passengers in steerage were given, a bar of Dial?
But did the soap float?
:-Daryl
I was just thinking, I would've thought they would be sure to give the scented soap to the steerage passengers. :)
Another fascinating piece of history from you. I wonder if you can buy this soap in the US; will check. The regular transparent Pears Soap is one I stock up on when I can find it---can you believe I found it in one of those dollar stores...for one dollar a bar?
Once they bathed in the salt-water, how did they get themselves clean? They must have taken two baths.
Tell us how that soap turns out!
maybe this soap cures the common cold. bet you'll find out!
