Camel Vintage Postcard

Holy Vintage Postcards Batman! Camels have three eyelids. (That's a lot of eyeshadow:)

3 pairs ensures that not a speck of sand flies into those pretty peepers. The first eyelid is lashless and clear but still blinkable.

This active camel looks likes he is ready to give you a big smooch!

seen these up close in the middle east when we worked there, ridden on one, even seen them wating to be cooked in a large pot for a wedding ceremony the more camels, the more wealth...when a baby camel is cooked, it really means the person is wealthy....sigh...

The beast in that first picture is one freaky-looking camel. Even for a camel.

I imagine the lashless/clear lid is like the sand screen first defense ... he/she can still see to walk and the sand wont get it ..

The other lids are probably like storm windows and shutters ..

Such funny looking faces

Let's face it. Camels are not only totally cool to look at - they are amazing survivors. You guys probably know this but those humps actually store fatty tissue as a kind of reservoir that acts as a source of energy in emergencies. I have also heard that camels tend to be a little grumpy and will spit at you if ticked off. Still - a camel ride would be pretty darned exciting to me. I will just need to be sure and bring an umbrella with me in case that bad temper surfaces.

This is one in-your-face camel! I'll pass on the smooch, though.

Did you know that Moammar Ghadafi once turned up to a non-aligned summit in Belgrade with two horses and six camels on a separate plane? The (then Yugoslav) government allowed him to graze the camels in front of his hotel - where he pitched his tent and drank fresh camel milk - but they refused to let him ride to the conference on one of his white chargers. The camels are still in Belgrade Zoo, and have produced little camels...
