I Heart Baby Ruth Vintage Postcards

Which candy bar makes your heart thump the loudest? I'm a Baby Ruth kind of girl.

The bar is actually named after president Grover Cleveland's daughter Ruth! (snore) What a boring namesake. I thought that it was named after the baseball legend!

Next thing you know I'll find out that Butterfingers aren't named for clumsy people. Sigh... I'm going to go eat an apple instead.

Barrely There Vintage Postcards

The advantage of these spiffy swimming trunks is that they float!

Lake Keuka, NY, is a feisty wine region. They produce out of this world Riesling and fine woody couture.
These vintage postcard safety seekers have very inventive life preservers on! Here's Noah sporting a more traditional model.

Growing Up Vintage Postcards

My blog is growing up. Hooray, I'm a big girl now!

My blog has a new domain name.
cpaphilblog.com The new address is short, sweet, silly, sharp, sunny, sugary, sassy, social .. and any other adjective starting with an 'S.'

Editor: Does that include stupid?

Marie: cpa = cartes postales anciennes = vintage postcards in French
phil = philately = the study of stamps

Editor: It's too bad that the word GEEK doesn't begin with an 'S'!

I also have a new and nifty blogicon. It shows up when you bookmark me with a waving French flag. You can get one too via Cara:)

Where's the Grits Vintage Postcard?

Grits have been called "The first truly American food."

They date back to 1607, when the colonists came ashore at Jamestown, Virginia. They were met by friendly Native Americans offering steaming hot bowls of "rockahominie," which was softened maize seasoned with salt and animal fat. (I'll lay off the lard)

Corn grits were traditionally preferred to oatmeal in the South because it could withstand heat and humidity.
I could go for a steaming bowl of cheese grits right now! Yum.

Editor: Aren't you forgetting to post a vintage postcard?
Marie: Kiss my grits! Lori commented about her yummy breakfast yesterday:) I just couldn't help myself!

Rosy Vintage Postcards

I spent a rosy day in Provins!

This French medieval town is famous for it's rose candy, lemonade, jam, honey, soap, oil, tea, liqueur... Breakfast was a hunk of baguette smothered in perfumed rose petal preserves with too much butter. It was divine!

Good Ole Eleanor Roosevelt can make a girl gasp and giggle. 'I once had a rose named after me and was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue: no good in a bed, but fine up against the wall.'

Force Fed Pepeye

I force fed the kids Popeye last night. Johnny had never heard of the iron fortified cartoon character (who would have like vintage postcards)

Johnny: Mom! I don't want to watch TV. I want to go play soccer.
Me: You sit down on that couch pronto buster! You. Popeye. Popcorn. Now.

John Boy asked to eat spinach with dinner tomorrow. My brainwashing clicked! This is culture kids.

Here is the very first Popeye episode with a bit o' Betty Boop to boot!

Elvis' Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich

Elvis was a peanut butter and banana sandwichaholic. I'm sure that he liked vintage postcards too:) Davis from Digital Art gave me this sticky tip. Elvis ate 12 - 15 of these babies a sitting with a tall glass of buttermilk.

  • 2 tablespoons of smooth peanut butter
  • 1 small ripe banana mashed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 pieces of white bread

Spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread and the mashed banana on the other. Press the slices gently together. Melt the butter (or to be truly Elvis-like, melt bacon fat!), over low heat in a small frying pan. Place the sandwich in the pan and fry until golden brown on both sides. Gobble down while listening to Elvis tunes!

Victorian Footwear - Vintage Postcards

This one risque vintage postcard!

A Victorian lass would be awfully embarrassed if these lovely slippers peeped out from under her dress. How scandalous! Lace and ribbon embellished footwear was made to be hidden away.

The 'practical' Victorian boot was constructed with tough leather which took ages to break in. Woman generally tried to squeeze jumbo jet feet into petite shoes. That sounds like quite a blistery combination. Ouch!

During this era, a woman held an image of innocence and silence and was characterized as childish. I'll kick that nption with my converse!

Hula Hoop Vintage Postcard

In Ancient Greece Hula Hoops were made out of dried stiff grapevines! A droopy Tarzan vine just wouldn't do the trick:)

Citizens hooped as a serious form of exercise.

Watch out Socrates .. Roxanne Rose has the current hooping record. The American went 90 whole hours in 1987. I better start practicing!

Summer Fun

Holy vintage postcards batman! Am I on the right blog? I want to share my summer with you. I feel so close to all of my blogging buddies!

Johnny has just learned to swim. Here is my proud little peacock.

This is Noah. He found my peppermint scented Hula Hoop in Grandma's basement. That plastic retro bit of hoopla lost it's candy cane 'aroma' 20 years ago. He's practicing because I out hooped him!

I'm going to start a Saint Fargeau daily photo blog when this vacation ends and we're back in France. I can't wait to begin this snapshot adventure!

Orange Flange Vintage Postcards

It's a gosh darn fact that no single English word rhymes with orange.

The drab noun combo 'door hinge' might aid when writing a little ode to the orange. Lozenge, flange, Stonehedge and porridge are noted half rhymes to the elusive fruit.

Editor: What is a flange?

Marie: (in plumbing) a plate or flat ring bolted to the flange at the end of a length of pipe to close the end or to connect it with the flange of another such length..... 'sigh' It's not very poetic.

I'll just have to stick with my favorite orange poem.

Four engineers
Wore orange brassieres.

Don't Sweat It Vintage Postcards

Hippo sweat is pink. I'm not kidding.

The rosy liquid helps the hairless hippo avoid a sunburn.
The pigment of the secretion absorbs the sun's blistering UV rays. It's sunscreen au naturel.

The 'sweat' also acts as an antibiotic ointment. (watch out
Neosporin) It's a lifesaving feature for male hippos, which often get injured when sparring with their sharp teeth over territory.

'This explains why hippo gashes and wounds rarely seem to get infected, even though male hippos have frequent, fierce fights.'

This vintage postcard friend from Jardin des Plantes in Paris could be the new spokeshippo for Coppertone!

Beer and BBQ for Breakfast

The six fingered Hound Dog Taylor is an American blues slide guitarist extraordinaire who collected vintage postcards.

This proud polydactyl (doesn't that sound like a dinosaur name) has a raw vocal style that is very youtubeable. The song, Wild about You, will have you tapping your foot and craving beer and bbq for breakfast.

I wouldn't mind an extra finger if it would upgrade my typing tempo!

My name is Jane and I am a Quailaholic

Jane Seymour, wife numero 3 of King Henry VIII of England, had a hankering for quails (and vintage postcards) all through her pregnancy.

Henry had the little birds shipped from Calais.

He ordered, 'fat quails which her Grace loveth very well, and longeth not a little for.'
A large consignment of quail did arrive to Jane's relief! (The image below reads Jane the Quene)

She gorged on them at every meal!

Chef's Hat Vintage Postcard

In the 16th century, bare - headed chefs were often imprisoned because of their freethinking and saucy ways.

Many chefs ( à la James Bond) went undercover. They hid in monasteries amongst priests and garbed themselves accordingly. Priests wore tall hats so... the chefs wore tall hats! The costume stuck.

I'll eat my hat if you can find out exactly why they were persecuted. I'm all googled out
.
Editor: Do you have a Texas ten gallon hat? Marie: I'll opt for a beanie!
